“I open the orangutan's door and set a pan of fruits, vegetables, and nuts on the floor. As I close it, her long arm reaches through the bars. She points at an orange in another pan. |
Habitat:
There are two sub-species of orangutans: The Sumatran and Bornean Orangutan. The Sumatran Orangutan swings in the treetops of the tropical rainforests, in Sumatra, Indonesia, rarely coming to the earth to roam around. Whilst, the Bornean Orangutan's habitat can range down, to the lowlands are in the tropical and subtropical rainforests of Borneo, Malaysia, to the mountains reaching up to 1500 metres in height!
People mistaken apes for monkeys, but the truth is apes don't have tails. That's how you can distinguish the difference between apes and monkeys. But if apes don't have tails, how do apes hang on the trees. Thanks to their highly knowledgeable intellect, instead of a tail, they use their hands to grip onto the branches. This is how orangutans harvest their fruit; swinging tree to tree the low canopies of the rainforests, to collect their fruit.
But unfortunately, these were the habitats of some orangutans. Every day, these habitats are going down tree, by tree, but if you want to put it into the perspective of the orangutans, it's: orangutan, by orangutan. Deforestation is a major threat to the orangutans. Bornean orangutan habitats in the last 60 years have declined by 50%, but in last 20 years the remaining habitats were declined by 55%!
"Models based on logging rates and the effect on Sumatran Orangutans predict that continued habitat loss, together with hunting, will cause population declines of 97% over the next 50 years – and eventually push the species to extinction." - WWF
Whether it's palm oil plantations or for paper! We need to stop! Would you rather to have only one packet 20 'Tim-tams' or let a beautiful, harmless being orangutan live?
"You would save your family, you would save the relatives, but what about the apes?
Diet:
An orangutan's diet mainly revolves around an omnivore diet, with over 400 types of different food options. They mainly eat fruits, especially durian. Durian is a big, spiky fruit, tasting delicious, yet having an unmistakably disgusting odour. At times of scarcity orangutans survive eating lower quality foods such as, bark, leaves and insects.
Appearance:
The two types of orangutans: Borneon and Sumatran, are beautiful animals. Borneon orangutans are known for their smooth, long, orange/red or brownish coat, whereas a Sumatran orangutan are known for their ginger-ish coat. Orangutans have a large snout and a high forehead.
